SAN FRANCISCO, CA—The San Francisco Symphony’s 2022–23 Great Performers Series presents ten programs featuring world-class artists in solo recitals and exceptional visiting orchestras performing at Davies Symphony Hall throughout the season. Featured artists include pianists Leif Ove Andsnes, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Daniil Trifonov; violinists Joshua Bell, Hilary Hahn, and Itzhak Perlman; the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason; and the Israel Philharmonic with conductor Lahav Shani. Additionally, pianist Igor Levit performs a solo recital as part of his 2022–23 artist residency and pianist Yuja Wang joins Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen and the San Francisco Symphony in special performances preceding the Orchestra’s European tour.

The 2022–23 Great Performers Series includes two orchestral presentations, kicking off October 16 with Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla conducting the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in the ensemble’s debut performance at Davies Symphony Hall. The program includes Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes, Thomas Adès’ The Exterminating Angel Symphony, Claude Debussy’s La Mer, and Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto featuring cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason. On November 6, Lahav Shani conducts the Israel Philharmonic in the first symphonies of Paul Ben-Haim and Gustav Mahler.

On November 13, pianist Daniil Trifonov performs Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Children’s Album, Robert Schumann’s Fantasie in C major, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Fantasia in C minor, Maurice Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit, and Alexander Scriabin’s Piano Sonata No. 5. Violinist Joshua Bell performs a solo recital on December 11 and violinist Itzhak Perlman returns to Davies Symphony Hall accompanied by his longtime recital partner pianist Rohan De Silva on January 15 (programs to be announced). On January 22, pianist Leif Ove Andsnes performs a solo recital opening with Leoš Janáček’s Piano Sonata, 1.X.1905, followed by Alexander Vustin’s Lamento, Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 31 in A-flat major, Opus 110, and concluding with Antonín Dvořák’s Poetic Tone Pictures.

In the lead up to the San Francisco Symphony’s March 2023 European tour, pianist Yuja Wang joins Esa-Pekka Salonen and the SF Symphony for two performances, March 1 & 2, featuring works that Wang and the Orchestra will perform during the tour. The program includes Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, Salonen’s Nyx, and the SF Symphony premiere of Gabriella Smith’s Tumblebird Contrails. Later that month, violinist Hilary Hahn returns to Davies Symphony Hall for a solo recital on March 12 (program to be announced) and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet performs a solo recital featuring Claude Debussy’s Préludes Books 1 and 2, March 26. 

The final Great Performers Series concert of the season features the San Francisco Symphony’s 2022–23 Artist-in-Residence, pianist Igor Levit. Concluding his multi-week concert residency with a solo recital on June 27, Levit performs Johannes Brahms’ Six Chorale Preludes, arranged by Ferruccio Busoni; Fred Hersch’s Variations on a Folk Song, which Levit personally commissioned; the Prelude to Richard Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, arranged by Zoltán Kocsis; and Franz Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B minor. Levit’s residency also includes two Orchestral Series concerts with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the San Francisco Symphony, June 15–17 and June 22 & 24–25, and a chamber music performance with members of the SF Symphony on June 18.

Davies Symphony Hall is currently operating at full audience capacity. Based on the advice of the San Francisco Symphony’s Health and Safety Task Force, a face covering is strongly recommended but not required for entry into Davies Symphony Hall beginning with the start of the Orchestra’s 2022–23 season. The San Francisco Symphony requires proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 for everyone entering Davies Symphony Hall ages 12 and up who’s eligible—including patrons, performers, volunteers, and staff. “Full vaccination” is defined as two weeks after completion of the two-dose regimen of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, one dose of Johnson & Johnson vaccine, or other WHO authorized COVID-19 vaccine. At this time, proof of booster shots is not required. Patrons under age 12 must show proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test (PCR test taken within 2 days of event entry or antigen [rapid] test taken within 1 day of event entry).
